Our Story

My name is Lynda, my family and I are Papamoa Beach locals. Together with the help of my daughters Ashleigh and Samantha, I have set up an online refill store here in the sunny Bay of Plenty.

A few years ago now, well more than a few if I’m honest, I began to become aware of the zero waste movement and started to follow some of the environmentally aware pages that were popping up on my social media feeds. What they were doing really resonated with me and my family. It was then that I decided to embark on my journey to sustainability and reducing our waste.

Then Covid-19 hit our lovely shores and I, like everyone else in New Zealand was locked down. It was during the first lockdown that it dawned on me that I had been working in the same industry since 1997 and had the revelation that it just wasn’t bringing me joy anymore and I was ready for a change of pace. It was time for something new and exciting.

So when my daughter Ashleigh said ‘Mum, why don’t you open a sustainable refill store?’ I realised that this was it, I could start to make a real difference eliminating not just plastic , but to reduce waste going to the landfill and become more sustainable overall. It was a true light bulb moment, and within days ‘Replenish Papamoa’ was born.

Shortly after that everything I needed to begin this new journey fell in to place. It was like it was meant to be, and the universe was saying ‘what took you so long’?

From this point, I set about learning as much as I could about living in a sustainable way. I soon realised that since having my own four children, I had already been a beginner ‘zero waste Mum’. I used cloth nappies, made baby clothes, utilised the local bulk refill store, re-used plastic bags when we shopped for food, and way before it became popular. Trust me I got plenty of strange looks in the process. I’m glad everyone else has now caught up.

So the next step was to decide what we as a family wanted Replenish Papamoa to look like. How we could contribute to reducing waste to the landfill and keeping our ocean and beaches clean. We need to move from a linear economy to a truly circular economy and we would like to think we are on the way to making it happen, even if it’s just in our little corner of the world.

We are all getting pretty good at this online shopping thing, thanks to all these lockdowns, BUT shopping online at a refill shop is probably a whole knew experience to most people – it can feel overwhelming especially as a first timer but it doesn’t have to be!
