What does it mean to be zero waste?

What does it mean to be zero waste?

In an ideal world, we would all be eco conscious and everyone would do their fair share to make our planet a waste free one. Unfortunately, that is not the case – most people and businesses (don’t even get me started on large corporates) either don’t have the time, education or the care factor to do better when it comes to reducing their waste.

A zero-waste world is one where “things” are valued and nothing goes to waste i.e. a circular economy.

A circular economy is where things are used over and over again with very limited resources ending up in a landfill. This of course takes time, and understanding - the former being the number 1 biggest factor. In today’s society, people simply do not have the time to educate themselves, make things for themselves, shop smarter, compost or even bother reading recycling labels.

That is where businesses like Replenish come in – to show the consumer it doesn’t have to take a lot of time or thought to make positive changes in this world. Something as simple as swapping out a few main household products is all it takes to GET STARTED.

Here at Replenish our goal is to make going “waste free” as easy as possible. From our easy to navigate website, to our subscription and delivery services, we are here to take the hassle out of being eco-friendly.

One of our audacious goals is to minimise and ultimately eliminate waste AKA zero waste. So, what does it mean to be “zero waste”? being zero-waste minimises waste (obviously), reduces needless consumption, maximises proper recycling and ensures that products are made to be reused, repaired, recycled or composted. In turn, this would hold large corporates accountable and push companies to rethink the way they make and do things on their end as this is where most of the problems begin in the first place.

The “ZERO WASTE” HIERACHY:

If the REPLENISH team had our way, the hierarchy would look like this:

REFUSE

REDUCE

REUSE

REPURPOSE

RECYCLE

Sadly, it looks like this:

DISPOSE

RECOVER

RECYCLE

REUSE

REDUCE

In this day and age – where time is limited and resources are plentiful - it is a seemingly daunting task to undertake to turn this hierarchy on its head BUT it isn’t impossible! Just by taking the first small step today and heading over to our store to add a few simple swaps to your cart you are helping to do your part. It doesn’t have to be a huge, loud, gesture – as we all know, small things, done often, add up to be the big things!

We took all of these things into consideration when starting Replenish – time, education, waste – hence Replenish Online was born. Our online subscription model takes the confusion out of things, doesn’t take any of your precious time and helps minimise waste both on our end and yours! TRIFECTA!

As always, if you need any help to get started on your refill journey, the Team are always here to assist.
